Data Sufficiency Arithmetic Reasoning

Data Sufficiency involves questions in logical reasoning which comprises of a few conditions and candidates need to analyse which of the given conditions may help get an answer or solution to the question. These questions are mostly asked to test the logical and analytic skills of the candidate.

Tips for Solving Data Sufficiency Question:

  • Do not look for the final answer (if not asked). You mostly have to only answer which conditions will satisfy your requirements to meet the answer to the questions.
  • Make sure - you do not make any assumptions. The information given in the question is the only fact that needs to be considered to answer the question
  • Data Sufficiency with Arithmetic Reasoning Arithmetic reasoning helps us to select the required information from a given question and solve that question using some mathematical concepts. It involves the basic mathematical and arithmetic problems

    Direction : Each of the questions below consists of a question and two statements numbered I and II given below it. You have to decide whether the data provided in the statement are sufficient to answer the question. Read both the statements and give answer

  • (a) if the data in statement I alone are sufficient to answer the question, while the data in statement II alone are not sufficient to answer the question.
  • (b) if the data in statement II alone are sufficient to answer the question, while the data in statement I alone are not sufficient to answer the question.
  • (c) if the data either in statement I alone or in statement II alone are sufficient to answer the question.
  • (d) if the data given in both statements I and II together are not sufficient to answer the question.
  • (e) if the data in both statements I and II together are necessary to answer the question
  • Question 1 : What is the monthly salary of Prashant ?

  • I.  Prashant gets 15% more than Sumit while gets 10% less than Lokesh.
  • II.  Lokesh's monthly salary is Rs 2500.
  • Answer : (e) : From both I and II, we find that :

    Solution : Prashant's salary = 115% of (90% of Rs 2500) = Rs 2587.50.

    Question 2 : A, B, C, D and E play a game of cards. How many cards does B have ?

  • Statement I : A says to B, "If you give me three cards, you will have as many as E has and if I give you three cards, you will have as many as D has." A and B together have 10 cards more than what D and E together have.
  • Statement II : If B has two cards more than what C has and the total number of cards be 133, how many cards does B have ?
  • Solution : (e)  From both I and II, we find that :

    As per the question :

    B - 3 = E....(1)

    B + 3 = D...(2)

    A + B = D + E + 10 ...(3)

    B = C + 2...(4)

    A + B + C + D + E = 133 ...(5)

    From 1 and 2 , B − E = D − B

    2B = D + E ..(6)

    From 3 and 6 , A + B = 2B + 10

    B = A − 10

    A = B + 10...(7)

    From 5 , 6 , 7 and 4 , B + 10 + B + B − 2 + 2B = 133

    ∴ B = 25
